BMW has invested about $10 million in its vehicle assembly plant in Spartanburg, S.C., to boost U.S. production of lithium ion battery packs.

The fourth-generation batteries will be used in plug-in hybrid models of the Spartanburg-built BMW X5 and the future BMW X3, the automaker said last week. BMW is making production plans to support the launch of 25 electrified vehicles globally by 2023, nearly half of which will be full electric.

The investment added an assembly line and expanded the battery production area at Spartanburg, created in 2015, to more than 86,000 square feet. The new line will employ more than 120 people by year end and be able to produce various types of batteries.
